Christmas Day can be a wonderful time for families and friends to come together, but for many people it can also be one of the loneliest days of the year. Last Christmas, we wanted to do something simple that might make a difference locally, so we opened our doors for a free Christmas Day afternoon tea.

The idea wasn’t about putting on a grand event. It was about creating a warm, welcoming space where people could come for a chat, a cup of tea and some company, whether they were on their own, struggling financially, new to the area or just wanted somewhere friendly to spend part of the day.
What we found was that people weren’t just looking for food — they were looking for connection.
The café was decorated for Christmas, the food was homemade and comforting, and volunteers helped create a relaxed atmosphere where people could sit, talk and feel included without any pressure. Some people stayed for ten minutes, others stayed for hours.
The menu included traditional afternoon tea favourites with a festive feel, including sandwiches, scones, cakes, mince pies and plenty of tea and coffee. More important than the menu though was the atmosphere. People who had never met before were sat talking together, sharing stories and enjoying being around others on a day that can feel difficult for many.
One of the biggest things we learned was that community doesn’t happen automatically — you have to create spaces where people feel comfortable enough to walk through the door. Offering something for free is one thing, but giving people a reason to come and making them feel genuinely welcome is what really matters.
The event also showed how much local communities still value places where people can gather in person. In a world where many traditional community spaces have disappeared, cafés can play an important role beyond simply serving food and drink.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who supported the event, whether through volunteering, donations or simply coming along. It reminded us that small acts of hospitality can have a much bigger impact than we sometimes realise.
We hope to continue building on this in the future and creating more opportunities for people to come together at Maple Park Café.
